Dragon Age: Origins (Ps3 First Impression)

Obtaining this game, in and of itself was a journey of epic proportions, involving a several headed beast straight from the pits of Consumer Hell.

I’m not going to name drop, but let’s just say this company is what you would like to see painted on someone’s head that you had no liking of.

That’s it. done ranting about it.

Now, on to the meaty-ness that is bioware’s newest love child for my RPG taste buds.  Dragon Age: Origins was somewhat a spur of the moment purchase for me, so I hadn’t been following it very closely. But it was Bioware, and therefore worth a gander, at the least.

Once said package was in house, I opened it carefully, as if it was a case of C-4 that was vibrating, and placed into my system i beheld the wonder of Dragon Age, at this very moment I have the playstationXMB sitting on the disc, looping the music, i feel as if Peter Jackson himself is having a party, with Orcs and wardrums directly behind me.

Character Creation:

A fairly simple creator, with some fairly detailed customization, if you’re wanting to invest some time in it, has presets and such shiny things. I made a character at first who looked like someone was perpetually removing their pants in front of said character, he looked so suprised and aghast. I eventually made a character that was bearable looking unless you looked at him from a 37 degree angle, but at that point i’d spent an hour playing with the creation tool alone, and I was ready to play.

and play I have.

The gameplay reminds me of Mass Effect, which makes sense, all things considered. Mass Effect if Tolkien was alive and wrote it, Tolkien had a thing for Orcs and monsters of the like, and in this game, so does Bioware.

So far in the storyline (I’m playing through as a Mage, oh how i love being the squishy sort) I’ve been told off by a bear, I’ve seen Ogres (and fought one), I’ve been betrayed a few times now and got a dog type beast as a pet that loyally follows me around and brings me silk pants. I’m serious.

Combat has a “pause” just like Mass Effect did, if you haven’t played it essentially you hit a button and it brings up a radial menu/ inventory of sorts that stops all action and let’s you set up some attacks, very nice in my opinion. Then again I’m not a hardcore RPG player, but I do love them so.

All in all, I’m 5 hours into the game, with only a few bugs on the Ps3 version thus far, such as the game lagging once during a battle, and an auto save bug that took about 5 minutes to finish. Aside from those two things right there, and a few complaints in the visual department this game as of this moment has lived up to the 56 dollar price tag that it came with, on top of that 56 dollar price tag, if you’re quick about getting it you actually get a free download of the Blood Dragon Armor, and the expansion involving Shale the Golem which is priced on PSN right now for 14.99 so that just adds to the worth of it. As are all good things however, that package is a limited time offer.

Once I play more, of course there will be more updates.
