Medal Of Honor (PS3) First Impression

Well, I’ve just finished the first mission of Medal of Honor. And my first thought is, this isn’t the sleeper I thought it was going to be.

I’m from the school of thought where a game should do a little something new to get you back in a series. Call of Duty 4 did that in making a jump to Modern Warfare. Modern Warfare 2 changed its iteration by painting a story of betrayal which left you with mouth agape, waiting for MW3.

Unfortunately for Medal of Honor, at least so far, they’ve given me no reason to say that this game is better than Call of Duty. So far, the mechanics seem a bit too quick, the graphics are a little rough, and I can get headshots like nobodies business. Now maybe the last part is just my extensive play of MW2, or maybe the “no iron sights” in Halo Reach is really starting to pay off, but I’m just not getting into this title like I thought I would.

It’s also way too worrying that Danger Close’s shot at campaign is way behind the polish DICE puts into it’s Battlefield series. When your multiplayer may play better than your single player, it’s not a good thing, even with online being the “big thing”.

The best thing I can say about this title is the story seems to be great so far. You start off hunting for a hostage from the very beginning, and this mission relies a bit more on skill than run and gun(trust me, you die fast out in the open). The controls are pretty normal, with the exception of your pistol, of which I find silly(double tapping triangle to get it, and it fires when meleeing from a long distance). There are several gripping parts/situations, but they felt a bit lost on me, whether its been done before a’ la MW2, or that it’s 3 in the morning.

As I put it, I’m just a mission in and haven’t played multiplayer yet, so I wouldn’t call this a non-sleeper yet. This game has a shot to get really good really fast. But I am truly concerned that this game did not wow me from the second I put it in. Hopefully we’ll have more of a full review soon.

Difficulties only make us stronger

So, we’ve obviously been in a state of flux here at Project Renegade. Hopefully, we’ll be able to correct this soon. We’re planning on trying to get some other writers on here to help us out from having to review EVERYTHING, and we’re going to try and restructure, maybe even do a name change. Thanks for all of your reading!

God Of War III First Impression

As we all know this title abides on the PS3, so there was no reason in my writing that in to the title. :P

So, what is God Of War III?

Along with Uncharted 2, it’s the reason you bought a PS3 in the first place.

God Of War III has wowed me in the first hour I have played it, not necessarily by simply gameplay and tuned graphics, but the overhaul to show you what Playstation is capable of.

I must start out with the graphics. Now, I have a 47in LCD at home, makes almost anything beautiful. But God Of War took full advantage of that with one of the most tremendous looking games this year. Certainly, we’ve been treated to visual marvels such as Mass Effect 2, Heavy Rain, and Final Fantasy. What makes God Of War stand out among these “titans”(Yeah, you know I had to find a way to throw a game reference in), is the fact that with the PS3 backing it, the visuals are darker and more brutal than ever. I thought the God Of War: Collection’s take was very well done, but Kratos is more brutal than before, his blades bright flashes of red as I tore through the waves of undead soldiers. Something else impressive? Now what can that be? Every so called cutscene? Completely drawn from the gameplay. Now while Final Fantasy definitely got me in the graphics department, even they had a separation to what was cutscene and what was gameplay. God Of War doesn’t and leaves you smashing buttons while a sequence folds out in front of you, tricking you to believe you might just change something.

In terms of gameplay, what stands out is presentation. I only had fought through the first wave and I was thrown about fighting Poseiden’s “horsecrabs”. This is what really stand out in the new God Of War, the creatures so much bigger than you in the first games that you would find graphically violent ways to “finish off” are now fought seemingly every 15 minutes. As far as controls go, there is nothing different, same buttons as ever, with a few polished ones and one or two additions. The button minigame has an awesome improvement, the moving of the center screen display to your top/bottom/left/right helps the presentation, keeps it away from the action, and helps you in pressing the correct button. Another great feature? Kratos Kill Cam. As I hit circle to finish Poseiden, I found myself watching all of this from his point of view. Watching Kratos kill me was nearly frightening, if I hadn’t been doing the killing all along.

The music and sound engineering in this series have always been good, and this one doesn’t change a bit, giving you the same effects and soundtrack. The voice actors of course have made a return, Kratos sounding just as brutal as ever. I really like the way they did the Poseiden water giant’s voice, making it sound like him talking underwater. It’s that attention to detail that makes this game so rock solid all the way around.

This is quite a review for only an hour of gameplay, so I’m going to jump right back into the action.

Heavy Rain Review, Fallen Earth and Monster Hunter Tri Demo first Impression.

So, It’s been a while since I’ve posted to here. Sorry about that, sometimes life takes over and I forget about things. Won’t happen again, promise.

So my first article today will be about Heavy Rain. You may have heard of this game from the same people who made Indigo Prophecy a few years back.

Basically the game starts out with a nice “tutorial” of sorts where you wander around a house and attempt to shag your wife, i think, but that’s besides the point. After the prologue you are then thrust into a game that is unlike any game I have ever played before. The game is fucking Heavy. I have played many many many games and I’ve been attached to characters, but never in the sense that I wish something had been done differently so that maybe something didn’t happen to them, or that maybe I could have changed what did.

I became extremely attached to the character Ethan in the game, and that could be because I myself, am a father. I found myself making choices in the game not on how I wanted the game to play out, but as to how I would actually choose in a real situation. The tagline for the game is “How far would you go for love?” and they push the limits at times, making you choose between things that are equally disturbing regardless if it’s the “right” or “wrong” choice and that line is very blurred throughout the game.

When I first started the game, I turned on the PS3 and I sat down with my Mountain Dew beside me and a well stocked plate of snack goodness, this is how I game do not judge me. At first the game was good, but it didn’t snag me for maybe the first hour. Not because it wasn’t good,  just that I was brushing my teeth and shaving and carrying groceries. In game. I do these things daily myself thank you very much, but as I said it’s pretty much the tutorial. Once i had gotten by the first hour or so of game play I looked at my watch and it was 2 am. I had started playing at 7pm, I was hooked. Every fight, every escape, every reveal had me wanting more. forcing myself to put the controller down and sleep was difficult.

Story wise, I can’t say much without spoiling things so I won’t. Basically you play 4 characters all tied into the Origami Killer. Ethan Mars a father who has gone through more than any father should and keeps going through it. Norman Jayden a FBI agent sent in to close the case, who may or may not have an addiction to a drug, that choice is yours. Scott Shelby, a retired police officer that is now a private investigator that is hired by the families of the victims of the Origami Killer, and last but not least Madison Paige who is a journalist of sorts who gets wrapped up in the story.

The story itself is phenomenal, which I’ve already covered in so many words, engrossing and intense. It’s basically like watching a movie, a very long ass movie, or a mini-series. However it never feels to long, in fact I wish there was more. Which thanks to DLC on the current systems will happen, and I can’t wait. The only complaint I have is that during the reveal, near the end, there is a moment that, to me, was a gaping hole in the plot. This however could just be me, and it didn’t affect the story itself, much.

Gameplay wise the game is nearly perfect, the biggest flaws I could see were the tank like controls (on occasion) and the also occasional “hey you’re playing this game right? You don’t mind if I just lock up your PS3 and force you to restart do you?” moments. Which only happened twice the entire game and I think it was triggered by starting a action at the same time that an event occurred, Which thanks to the games autosave every time you make a choice or do something important feature, this was never a issue that made me want to stop playing.

So with all that ^^ being said, Heavy Rain is one of the best games I have ever had the joy of playing, even if it did cause my heart to break on a few occasions. There is also rumored to be 22 endings to the game, and I’ve seen 1 so I’ve got a while to go before I’m done with it and even then this is a game that will remain in my collection for a long time, if not forever just as Indigo Prophecy has done since I first played it albeit on different consoles.

There is a demo out for it on the PSN, or if you feel like taking a leap for a game that will make you think about the choices you make and what you can do differently on the next playthrough, this is it.

For my closing I will say this, if my review has enticed you to go out and get the game or rent it whatever you crazy kids do these days, if you make a choice and you don’t like what happens because of it, suck it up and keep playing the ending will feel more natural and the consequences of your actions will weigh on the outcome more.

Fallen Earth is a online MMO that is basically Mad Max or Fallout. World destroyed by a virus and nukes, yay! A friend of mine (yes I have some of those) sent me a text last night saying I should take a gander at this game, so I said what the poop, I will. I did. After putting about 5 hours in I can’t say much, but I can say that it is a fresh MMO that is not without it’s flaws but it shines as well. I will have to post more about it as I delve deeper into the apocalyptic world of 2156 (roughly). So stay tuned for more on this game.

Monster Hunter Tri is a game that I have been waiting and hoping for since they first announced that it might hit the PS3, well Capcom said that wasn’t going to happen and instead they are releasing it on the Wii, with some interesting control schemes. Now if you don’t know what Monster Hunter is it’s basically a game where you do exactly like the title says. You hunt big ass monsters that enjoy kicking you in the uvula. You get to pick weapons like guns, maces, swords, swords and shields and a bagpipe, Yes, a bagpipe. The game is huge in Japan with network parties and such for just killing monsters with 3 of your friends. I’m a big fan of these games on the PSP and I have a few fellows I hunt with on occasion through the Adhoc Party on PSN. The games integrity seems to stand up to the console shift from PSP to Wii. The game was originally out on the good ol PS2, so it’s not new to consoles. In the demo you pick from a pre-created character that you then select one of two missions to try, and if you’re like me at all and don’t read the instructions the controls then rape you more than the monsters. However once you figure out how it works it’s very fluid and death is every where. A addition I do like to the Wii version is that if you injure a monster enough, it will actually go and eat smaller monsters to restore health, grotesque but more real. You can pick up a copy of the demo, for free, at your local gamestop and then you can see what the game is like and if it’s good, to you, you can preorder the game and if you get the special edition which is 10 dollars more you get a Wii Classic Controller with the game which I’m thinking will make playing much easier. With the nunchuck and wii-mote i look like a retarded gazelle playing the Wii, on any game.

This is all for now, please stand by for more updates in the coming days and weeks. Ya know. God of War and such.

Final Fantasy XIII First Impression

As I received my copy, it was as a gift was bestowed upon me. The collectors guide sufficed as a combo collectors edition after cost, and I came home with a Red Bull to play. So far so good. I’m on a bridge scene still, have had the chance to play as Lightning and Snow so far from their storylines. In Snows I believe I’ve located Hope as well.

The graphics of this game are beautiful so far. Arguably the best looking game this year, even over titans such as Mass Effect 2 and Heavy Rain.

The gameplay is also very immersive and easy to figure out. The ATB, or Action Time Battle system, is very fluid. Only thing I could use is a dodge. Guess time will tell as to whether or not I get that, not that it matters. Also missing a jump button. Maybe its just me, but games missing a jump button really don’t interest me as much. Perhaps this will be a first.

UPDATE: The game still has those cheesy cutscenes with NPCs acting like idiots and such, and Final Fantasy still has crazy hair mania, must just be the Japanese. Also, the girl that is with Hope, the red head? Very hawt. Lightning is too. By the way, if Lightning is supposed to be the “female Cloud”, then Snow is so the “male Tifa”. Totally fits. Now to play as Hope.

Well, onto playing for a bit longer. Everyone else, enjoy your FFXIII!

Our Apologies/Back Up

As some of you know, this site is run by GameStop employees, and we were striving to make it better and into an actual website rather than blog. But, holidays and other jobs happen, and we haven’t been able to keep up with things as we’d like. But we’re happy to announce our return to Project Renegade and that we should be up and running soon based out of a new office setup. Thanks! Over and out.

Call of Duty : Modern Warfare 2 (PS3) warning, some spoilers

So, I finished the MW2 campaign. And I am ridiculously impressed.

The game starts you off like the other one did, right in a training simulation. This is probably the most calm moment you will experience in the game. The rest of the time, you are thrown into gigantic battles, plots of betrayal, and humongous explosions of massive preportions.

My jaw dropped after the first mission and stayed there throughout the entire game. To inform most, the “terrorist” mission is not that bad. In fact, everytime I visit an airport, it nearly frustrates me to the point I want to do that. Good stress release.

The storyline is immaculately crafted. The twists and turns it takes while solving nearly nothing in the process is mind boggling. It truly weaves a large web of deception.

Weapons, good as well. I personally tend to stick with the SCAR or Barrett, but there is a really large selection. The extra attachments are awesome too, personal fave is the thermal scope. Heartbeat sensor is really cheap though.

Graphics are a bit of a step up from COD4, so don’t expect much in lines of an upgrade. All in all however, the level of realism is really good, and the intensity of each mission keeps you from taking a close look at the graphics.

The online multiplayer and sepc ops modes are great compliments to the storyline. Spec ops is a ton of fun with random missions to test your (or a friends) skill at that type of game mode. For the most part its similar to the terrorist hunt from Rainbow Six, but it changes it up enough to feel like you’re testing a completely new game mode.

The multiplayer is exactly as you remember it from COD4, but with more weapons, perks, and attachments. One of my only complaints with the game is the maps. The only one I really enjoy playing on is Highrise. All of the other maps are just really way too wide open, giving snipers too much of a shot at you.

All together, this game is one of the best this year, and deserves best shooter of the year, as it recieved. This game deserves perfection, but I’m just going to give it a 9.5/10, because even with such a winning formula, the didn’t change much from COD4, and the multiplayer maps are frustrating.

Final Score -
Storyline – 9/10
Graphics – 8/10
Sound – 10/10
Multiplayer -10/10
The Final Word – 9.5/10
